Calling Contras, Squares,
and Community Dances for
all Ages
Fern Bradley has become a regional favorite dance caller since
moving to the Hudson Valley area in 2005. New dancers and experienced
dancers alike appreciate her relaxed teaching style, her warm voice,
and her knack for choosing dances that are just the right fit for
the mix of dancers on the floor. Fern loves to introduce people
to contra dancing, and she also enjoys calling community and family
dances, blending a variety of folk traditions at events designed
for people of all ages.
Fern has been part of the mid-Atlantic and New England dance scene
for more than 25 years, since she first learned to contra dance
in Princeton and Lambertville, New Jersey. Fern began calling contra
dances in 2000 while living in eastern Pennsylvania and has since
expanded her calling repertoire to include square dances and community
dancing. She is one of the organizers of the Hubbard Hall Contra
Dance in Cambridge, New York, and the editor of the Dance Flurry
News.
When Fern takes off her dancing shoes,
she devotes much of her time to editing and writing books, primarily
about organic gardening
and farming. She is the author of Rodale’s
Vegetable Garden Problem Solver.
