with Hilary Schrauf for 6 weeks
This class assumes moderate previous experience with the fiddle (know the names of the notes and strings; know how to hold the bow), and little to moderate experience with Irish traditional music. We’ll have fun digging in to the different types of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.) — and maybe a composition or two — while exploring what makes them sound Irish. Some bowing, slurring, ornamentation, and variations will be taught. Sound files, sheet music and links to other resources will be provided. Reading sheet music is not a requirement.
For more information contact Hilary at 518-424-8701 or hilary.schrauf@gmail.com
Class Dates: Nov. 17, 24, Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22
For Matt and Robert, American Roots Music (Folk, Blues, Spirituals, Work Songs, Chants, etc.) is music that matters. This is the music that America and the world have in common. It is music that reflects history, social change, migration, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse, direct and powerful.

Bruce Molsky stands today as perhaps the premier old-time fiddler in the world. His own personal authenticity deeply informs his music. Whether performing an ancient reel from Virginia, a Swedish waltz, or a loping cowboy ballad, Bruce presents himself as exactly who he is. He knows that traditional music is real people’s music, the honest expression of life as we all live it. You don’t master that by imitating others, nor by trying to live in other people’s worlds. You master it by being yourself; and at that profoundly simple and profoundly difficult musical art, Molsky is truly old-time music’s master craftsman.

Fleet-fingered fretwork, poetic songwriting, impassioned picking, known as one of the finest songwriters after Bob Dylan, and best electric guitarist since Jimi Hendrix (acoustic too!), Richard Thompson will delight your senses with his insightful songs, and soulful singing.
He first gained prominence in the late 1960s as the lead guitarist and songwriter for the folk rock group Fairport Convention, which he had co-founded in 1967. After leaving the group in 1971, he had a solo career, was in a duo with his then wife Linda Thompson, after which he resumed his solo career, where three of his albums were nominated for Grammy Awards

with Ron Gordon for 6 weeks
This 6 week class will help the beginning guitar player get to the next step in strumming and bass-pick right hand technique, and introduce the first stages of finger picking. We’ll learn about leading and alternating basses, and how to apply this in using both a flat pick and a thumb pick. As we proceed through the common keys/chord shapes, we’ll sing some great songs along the way. Knowledge of the basic chords “down the neck” and a decent wi-fi connection will be needed (for using Skype). Song sheets, playing guides, and sound files will be emailed ahead of each session.

Magpie is Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner, whose repertoire ranges from traditional and vintage Americana to contemporary and original compositions. Terry is a gifted singer of jazz and blues, but is equally comfortable with the subtle beauty of traditional folk and contemporary songs. She is also an excellent player of the harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer, and rhythm guitar. Greg is an outstanding finger-style guitarist, and his captivating vocal interpretation gives power and beauty to the full spectrum, from growling blues, to a Chilean lament, to a sweet croon. magpiemusic.com

Folk music’s renaissance man — master instrumentalist, powerful singer-songwriter, storyteller, activist, and author. folkmusic.com
“In this concert, I’ll do a blend of traditional songs and my own, especially those I’ve written in recognizable traditional forms. I’ll give a shoutout to those groups who continue to celebrate, teach, and honor traditional music and those that are shepherding it into our own lives and times. We’ll have a bit of a campfire Q&A after the music, just like we do in person. And, who knows?, maybe we might even have a special guest or two!”
Ticket price: $20 General, $30 Family/household, $10 Student, $5 Unemployed/Laid Off. Tickets are sold through Mandolin. The concert is presented in collaboration of the Artist, Old Songs and several other folk organizations, and privately streamed on Mandolin.

A unique opportunity to hear this duo. Together, Joy & Chris will share with you their many treasures from the sea and shore. You’ll hear rousing chanteys, soulful ballads and laments, old favorites and new finds, and close harmonies. And, you’ll have lots of opportunity to sing along.
Chris has been singing folk music since his early teens, comes from a family rich in maritime traditions, and his lullabies as a child were traditional songs of the sea. A multi-instrumentalist, Chris may be heard playing Guitar, Concertina, Banjo, or Mandolin. He spent twenty years associated with the Chantey Department at Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, one of the few places left where museum visitors can hear the songs and see the work for which they were used. chriskoldewey.com
Joy has been singing most of her life, developed a love of sea chanteys at South Street Seaport Museum in college and today is a highly respected singer as a founding member of the internationally acclaimed ensemble “The Johnson Girls”, an all female a capella sea chantey and maritime quartet with a devoted following since 1997.
The concert will be streamed on YouTube. Please mention Joy & Chris in the Tip Jar to support the artists and Old Songs. No Advanced Ticket Sales.
