The acoustic jazz ensemble, Rhythm Future Quartet has a straightforward agenda: to keep the spirit of Gypsy jazz alive and expanding in today’s musical universe. The virtuosic foursome, named for a Django Reinhardt tune, offers up a newly minted sound, influenced by the classic Hot Club of France, yet wholly contemporary. Led by violinist Jason Anick, the quartet performs dynamic and lyrical arrangements of both Gypsy jazz standards and original compositions that draw upon diverse international rhythms and musical idioms. With Max O’Rourke, Henry Acker, and Greg Loughman rounding out the quartet, Rhythm Future Quartet is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of a vital musical genre.

Growing up, Joe Newberry and April Verch absorbed traditions of home and hearth – in his Missouri Ozarks and her Ottawa Valley of Canada. In a Newberry & Verch show, delighted audiences see first-hand the roots of their music, their love of performing, and their strong musical connection. Original songs join timeless classics. Stories warm the heart and give audiences a chance to understand where the music comes from. Niamh Parsons has come to be known as one of the most distinctive voices in Irish music. Her voice has drawn comparisons to such venerated singers as Dolores Keane, June Tabor, and Sandy Denny. Described in the Boston Herald as both emotionally haunting and tonally as clear as crystal. Niamh has gathered a body of songs from many sources, both traditional and modern songwriters. Once she discovers a song she likes, Niamh views herself as the vehicle for the music. “For me the song is more important than listening to my voice, … I consider myself more a songstress than a singer – a carrier of tradition.”

As both singer and songwriter, Jim Malcolm is one of the most distinctive voices in Scottish music, “one of the finest singing voices in Scotland in any style”. He has a huge repertoire of songs from the Scottish tradition and is a noted interpreter of Burns. These old songs are complemented by his own original and award-winning songs, which are at once completely modern and accessible, yet an authentic addition to the cannon of Scottish music. Jim plays expressive guitar in mainly DADGAD tuning, and simultaneously plays tunes on harmonicas to a standard you’ll seldom hear elsewhere. “Given the right song, he’ll melt you in your seat,” as one critic wrote. What’s more, Jim’s between-song wit has developed to an art form all of its own.
