This is a friendly, repertoire-building opportunity to play your new tunes slowly and work on your old tunes at a reasonable tempo. We will focus specifically on traditional Irish music, and all Irish-appropriate instruments are welcome (i.e. wooden flute, tin whistle, concertina, button or piano accordion, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle, harp). We encourage tape recorders, and focus on learning tunes by ear. Music stands and continuous use of sheet music discouraged. Bring snacks to share. Led by Sean McCorkle.

John McCutcheon is simply one of our most respected and loved folksingers. Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, singer, storyteller, recording artist, producer, author, educator, and committed grassroots political activist, he is indeed “Virginia’s rustic Renaissance man” (the Washington Post). But it is in live performance that John feels most at home, whether in a major concert hall or theater, in an elementary school auditorium, on a festival stage, or at a farm rally. Whether in print, on record, or on stage, few people communicate with the versatility, charm, wit, or pure talent of this man. folkmusic.com

We’ll learn to think musically and play using the ideas of form, rhythm, melody and harmony. Our particular focus will be using traditional forms most fretted players will encounter : reels, breakdowns, waltzes, jigs, blues, songs, etc. Bring your fretted instrument and we’ll practice and apply these concepts at each class. Ability to read music not needed for this class, although helpful.

Dan Berggren, Peggy Lynn, and Dan Duggan have combined talents to create Jamcrackers, named in honor of the river drivers who broke up log jams. Those drivers worked hard to find solutions, to get things rolling again, and they couldn’t do the job alone. These three feel the same way about their music. With guitars and dulcimer (and other instruments), the trio showcases unique arrangements and striking harmonies as they present a diverse blend of folk and blues, ballads, gospel, and dance tunes.

The musical partnership between consummate performer Alasdair Fraser, “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling”, and brilliant Californian cellist Natalie Haas spans the full spectrum between intimate chamber music and ecstatic dance energy. Over the last 20 years of creating a buzz at festivals and concert halls across the world, they have truly set the standard for fiddle and cello in traditional music. They continue to thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music. alasdairandnatalie.com
