This class is for those who already have some clawhammer banjo experience, and can already play some tunes. The tunes you’ll be learning will use the essential left hand techniques of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides. Also you will use right hand techniques such as the drop-thumb and the “galax lick.” You will learn different tunings for different tunes. Tunes will be learned through listening, repeating, and tablature. A recording device will be helpful!
For more information contact Paul at 518-380-1103 or clawhammer888@gmail.com.
Class Dates: Oct. 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7, 14, 21
Boston-based Irish flute player and singer Shannon Heaton has been heralded as one of North America’s finest traditional musicians. A warm and entertaining performer, Heaton excels at making Irish music fresh and accessible to a wide variety of audiences. With her appealing mix of instrumentals and heartfelt ballads, she offers world class music with Irish roots and universal appeal.
For this concert Heaton teams up with Newfoundland native Keith Murphy, whose guitar playing and singing wells from traditions in Ireland, Eastern Canada, Quebec and his adopted home of Vermont. His rhythmic guitar playing brings new shape to old music. And his intimate style of traditional singing in English and French infuses ballads with a powerful immediacy.

You may remember Andrew from the Great Bear Trio or the Andrew and Noah Band. As a musician, singer and songwriter, Andrew’s debut solo album That We Could Find A Way To Be focuses on the complicated intersections of love, faith, loss and uncertainty, queerness and the search and struggle for understanding. From the rust belt to the Blue Ridge, cold spring in New England to a summer’s night in Charlottesville; Andrew blends traditional folk, old-time and country music with indie-roots-Americana. For this concert Andrew will be joined by Anna Patton on clarinet and Dana Billings on percussion.

Master guitarist, singer, and songwriter Archie Fisher is Scotland’s foremost troubadour. Archie was born in Glasgow into a large singing family, which yielded three professional singers—Archie and his sisters Ray and Cilla. Music was always in the house: his father’s appreciation of many musical styles (opera, vaudeville, and traditional ballads) proved to be a heavy influence on Archie’s own music, while his mother, a native Gaelic speaker from the Outer Hebrides, was a strong influence on the lyrical quality of his songwriting.

The musical partnership between consummate performer Alasdair Fraser, “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling”, and brilliant Californian cellist Natalie Haas spans the full spectrum between intimate chamber music and ecstatic dance energy. They thrill audiences with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music.
This seemingly unlikely pairing of fiddle and cello is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser. His search eventually led him to find a cellist who could help return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music, where it stood for hundreds of years before being relegated to the orchestra.
