If you have taken a “basics” class, or have been self taught in ukulele and would like to review and learn new musical skills, this is the class for you! We will review basic strums and chords through a variety of songs, and than move on to chord melody, and finger picking techniques. Through listening, learning and participation, students will extend their song list and become even more creative on the uke. Handouts provided, and a recording device is
recommended.

Vermont’s own trad roots power trio, Pete’s Posse, is composed of acclaimed musician Pete Sutherland (fiddle, piano, banjo, melodica and vocals), his talented protégé Oliver Scanlon (fiddle, viola, mandolin, foot percussion and vocals) and the uber-dynamic Tristan Henderson (guitars, mandolin, jaw harp, foot percussion and vocals). Twin fiddles in tight, wild harmony over high-powered guitar and pounding footwork with mandolin, clawhammer banjo, jawharp and rocking keyboards adding their voices to the mix. Songs and tunes, old and new, lyrical and driving: that’s the multi-generational heart and mind of PETE’S POSSE, at work and at play.

Learn and consolidate the essential skills needed for playing old-time music in the clawhammer style. We will work on the following (but not limited to):
You will learn these techniques within the context of “Round Peak” banjo tunes. The tunes (some simple, some more involved) will be learned through listening, repeating, and tablature. It is highly recommended that you bring along a recording device! Also recommended (but not required): Brad Leftwich’s book with CD: Round Peak Style Clawhammer Banjo. Please note: It is assumed that the student already has basic “banjo knowledge” and can play a few tunes.

A concert of New York State’s hidden history in a performance of authentic songs used to persuade, rally and celebrate as sung by women and men during the American Women’s Suffrage Movement. Songs which range from humorous to poignant, from strident marches to hymns, and popular parlor songs. Through historical narrative and the songs we will tell the story of how American women won the right to vote in 1917 in New York, and 1920 in the nation. forwardintolight.oldsongs.org
