with Hilary Schrauf for 6 weeks
This class assumes moderate previous experience with the fiddle (know the names of the notes and strings; know how to hold the bow), and little to moderate experience with Irish traditional music. We’ll have fun digging into the different types of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.) — and maybe a composition or two — while exploring what makes them sound Irish. Some bowing, slurring, ornamentation, and variations will be taught. Sound files, sheet music, and links to other resources will be provided. Reading sheet music is not a requirement.

Class Dates: Mon. 10/24, Tues. 11/1, Mon. 11/7, Mon. 11/14, Tues. 11/22, TBD

For nearly two years John and Tom Paxton have been Zoom-writing songs every Monday afternoon. And, boy, have they come up with a catalog of amazing songs. Ukrainian Now, their anthem for Ukraine, was a Facebook viral hit, prompting Noel Stookey (the Paul of Peter, Paul, and Mary) to assemble an all-star folk music ensemble for a video that went around the world. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. From the humorous to the heartfelt, two of folk music’s iconic songwriters have teamed up and the result has been fun, powerful, and affirming. In fact, John’s next recording project will bring in not only these songs, but Tom Paxton himself.
Join John for an evening of unveiling a dozen or so brand new songs he and Tom Paxton have written, as well as a handful of Tom’s classic songs.

After many years of serving as the vocal bedrock of the hit Boston institution “A Christmas Celtic Sojourn,” Windborne is performing a full show of their favorite songs of the season! A joyful and heartfelt celebration of song, Windborne’s lush vocals and unique arrangements bring light to a dark time, as they draw on midwinter music from traditional, classical, and folk from the US, British Isles and beyond. Unique from their typical show, the holiday spirit is accentuated with added instrumentation, from concertinas, guitars, and flute, to Lithuanian Kanklės, Irish bodhran, and Georgian Panduri.
With Windborne as their guide across continents and centuries, audiences will be delighted by holiday stories, songs, and humor in a livestream concert for the whole family! Sing along with familiar favorites, enjoy new twists on old classics or sit back and enjoy discovering new favorites, but make sure you don’t miss Windborne’s Music of Midwinter!

This is a friendly, repertoire-building opportunity to play your new tunes slowly and work on your old tunes at a reasonable tempo. We will focus specifically on traditional Irish music, and all Irish-appropriate instruments are welcome (i.e. wooden flute, tin whistle, concertina, button or piano accordion, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle, harp). We encourage tape recorders, and focus on learning tunes by ear. Music stands and continuous use of sheet music discouraged. Bring snacks to share. Questions? Contact Hilary Schrauf at 518-424-8701.
