Mandolin
with Ron Gordon
We will learn the picking and fingering exercises that enable the ability to play the mandolin. We’ll cover a combination of traditional American and Celtic fiddle tunes as well as beginning classical pieces to facilitate your musical expression. There will be a combination of reading music on the mandolin, as well as ear training. Get yourself started on an instrument that fits into so many styles of music. Handouts and music provided, and a recording device recommended.

Fingerpicking & Flatpicking Guitar
with Ron Gordon
Learn and apply the fundamental concepts of counterpoint on the steel string guitar. This involves leading, alternate, and runs in the bass; while strumming a rhythm or finger picking an arpeggio, pattern pick, melody line, etc. Knowledge of chords “down the neck”, and how to play a basic rhythm is necessary. For returning students, the songs and tunes we learn will be all new.

Matthew Byrne
Great interpreter of traditional Newfoundland songs, powerful vocals, guitar, and storytelling, Matthew has a presence that fills the room. He comes from a family of tradition bearers, with a fascination with unearthing and re-imagining traditional songs with the right combination of melody and language. For Matthew, songs are ways of understanding people before him, their lives, work, language, and worldviews. Join us and get swept away to Newfoundland’s shores.

Accordion for Kids
with Peggy Hart
We are looking for young people between the ages of 4–14 who would like to play the accordion. Your child will learn to play this fascinating instrument, while participating in an accordion band. Parents, please call early to reserve your child’s spot.
New Accordions will be available to rent for $25 for the entire class, with a $50 deposit to be refunded at the end of the class.

Máire Ní Chathasaigh & Chris Newman — Postponed to Spring 2021
Máire Ní Chathasaigh & Chris Newman have been described as “the high-wire act in traditional music” (The Irish Times). Máire is arguably the most influential, interesting, and original player of the Irish harp; she also composes, sings, and plays tin whistle and piano. Chris is arguably the UK’s finest flatpicking guitarist; he is also a prolific composer, arranger, and humorist. Together, they have created one of the most distinctive voices in modern acoustic music, performing a breathtaking blend of traditional Irish music, hot jazz, bluegrass, and baroque, along with striking new compositions.

Low Lily — Postponed to April 9, 2021
The vocal and string band Low Lily explores the roots and branches of American folk music with traditional influences and modern inspiration that weaves together a unique brand of acoustic music. Liz Simmons (vocals and guitar), Flynn Cohen (vocals, guitar and mandolin), and Lissa Schneckenburger (vocals and fiddle) are masterful players with deep relationships to traditional music styles ranging from bluegrass to Irish, Scottish, New England and Old Time Appalachian sounds. When you combine this with stellar composition skills and inventive arrangements you get music that is rooted yet contemporary.

Maria Zemantauski — Canceled
Internationally acclaimed guitarist, Maria Zemantauski, presents a program of classics and stunning originals. Embracing the classical and traditional flamenco repertoire for her foundation, she takes her audience on a musical journey inspired by her flair for experimentation and pure love of the instrument.
