Martin Carthy — Livestream from the UK

Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 3:00 pm EST
Livestream from the UK, United Kingdom

Old Songs is partnering with Falcon House Concerts, Folk Music Society of NY, Branford Folk Music Society, Folk Song Society of Greater Boston, and the Folklore Society of Greater Washington to bring you the Livestream from the UK Concert Series from the Falcon Studio in Whitby, UK

Martin Carthy has remained one of the most influential figures in British traditional music, inspiring contemporaries such as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, and later artists such as Richard Thompson, since he emerged as a young musician in the early days of the folk revival. Along with his wife, Norma Waterson, he may be best known for his work with the Watersons, Steeleye Span, the Albion Band, Waterson-Carthy, and with his daughter Eliza. It is indeed a treat and a rare opportunity to hear Martin.

Beppe Gambetta — Live at Old Songs

Friday, March 25, 2022, at 7:30 pm EDT
Old Songs Community Arts Center, 37 S Main St
Voorheesville, NY 12186 United States

In Person AND Live Streamed at Old Songs

In a world dominated by the trends and logic of the market, Beppe Gambetta’s playing and singing stand out. His is an inspired music that avoids relying solely on his technical excellence, but also reveals the innermost feelings of a brilliant, playful mind that is always exploring and innovating while staying firmly rooted in tradition. He naturally and seamlessly bridges the shores of two continents, creating a musical fusion of American roots and the Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads, steel-string guitars and vintage harp-guitars.

Tom Lewis — Livestream from the UK

Old Songs is partnering with Falcon House Concerts, Folk Music Society of NY, Branford Folk Music Society, Folk Song Society of Greater Boston, and the Folklore Society of Greater Washington to bring you the Livestream from the UK Concert Series from the Falcon Studio in Whitby, UK

Tom Lewis loves to sing. And he loves it when people sing along. His powerful voice easily reaches to the rafters and just seems to pull other voices up aloft with it. Known throughout the maritime music world for penning classics like A Sailor Ain’t a Sailor (The Last Shanty)Marching InlandSailor’s Prayer (the one where the dove has wings as sharp as razors), Tom is just as likely to belt out a traditional sea chantey pulled straight from Davy Jones locker. He’ll even tell you a story, and it might even be true!

An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Monday, happening 7 times

Old Songs Community Arts Center, 37 S Main St

with Hilary Schrauf for 6 weeks

This class assumes moderate previous experience with the fiddle (know the names of the notes and strings; know how to hold the bow), and little to moderate experience with Irish traditional music. We’ll have fun digging in to the different types of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.) — and maybe a composition or two — while exploring what makes them sound Irish. Some bowing, slurring, ornamentation, and variations will be taught. Sound files, sheet music and links to other resources will be provided. Reading sheet music is not a requirement.
