Martin Carthy has remained one of the most influential figures in British traditional music, inspiring contemporaries such as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, and later artists such as Richard Thompson, since he emerged as a young musician in the early days of the folk revival. Along with his wife, Norma Waterson, he may be best known for his work with the Watersons, Steeleye Span, the Albion Band, Waterson-Carthy, and with his daughter Eliza. It is indeed a treat and a rare opportunity to hear Martin.

The Wilsons are a group of brothers from northeast England who sing the old songs — and some newer ones — in lusty harmony. They worked with Sting on the New York performances of The Last Ship and are great admirers of the songs of Peter Bellamy, many of which they sing.

Though John is often thought of as one of the most prolific and powerful songwriters in folk music, his roots are firmly planted in traditional music. As a young 20-year-old he traveled the Appalachians, apprenticing himself to some of the greats of traditional Southern music. This concert will feature an homage to his many mentors, selections from his field recordings housed at the Library of Congress’ Archive of American Folksong, and some very special surprises.
Ticket price: $20 Livestream, $30 Family, $10 Student, $65 Series Pass, and more. Tickets are sold through Mandolin. The concert is being presented by the Artist and privately streamed on Mandolin. No Refunds.

This class is for those who already have some clawhammer banjo experience, and can already play some tunes. The tunes you’ll be learning will use the essential left hand techniques of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides. Also you will use right hand techniques such as the drop-thumb and the “galax lick.” You will learn different tunings for different tunes. Tunes will be learned through listening, repeating, and tablature. A recording device will be helpful!

In a world dominated by the trends and logic of the market, Beppe Gambetta’s playing and singing stand out. His is an inspired music that avoids relying solely on his technical excellence, but also reveals the innermost feelings of a brilliant, playful mind that is always exploring and innovating while staying firmly rooted in tradition. He naturally and seamlessly bridges the shores of two continents, creating a musical fusion of American roots and the Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads, steel-string guitars and vintage harp-guitars.

This class assumes moderate previous experience with the fiddle (know the names of the notes and strings; know how to hold the bow), and little to moderate experience with Irish traditional music. We’ll have fun digging in to the different types of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.) — and maybe a composition or two — while exploring what makes them sound Irish. Some bowing, slurring, ornamentation, and variations will be taught. Sound files, sheet music and links to other resources will be provided. Reading sheet music is not a requirement.
