Beginner Ukulele
with Ron Gordon
Begin your uke career! Ron’s class at Old Songs will get you started down the path to heavenly strumming.We will learn chords (of course), right hand strumming techniques, some chord melody, jazzy, blues, etc. voicings and some finger picking… depending on our progress. This will all be learned through some classic songs, so singing is definitely part of the program. Handouts provided and recorders recommended. BTW, we’ll also delve into some uke history and ukeology along with my personal favorite… uke collecting!

Intermediate Guitar
with Ron Gordon
Learn and apply the fundamental concepts of counterpoint on the steel string guitar. This involves leading, alternate, and runs in the bass; while strumming a rhythm or finger picking an arpeggio, pattern pick, melody line, etc. Knowledge of chords “down the neck”, and how to play a basic rhythm is necessary. For returning students, the songs and tunes we learn will be all new.

Intermediate Clawhammer Banjo
with Paul Draper
This class is for those who already have some clawhammer banjo experience, and can already play some tunes. The tunes you’ll be learning will use the essential left hand techniques of hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides. Also you will use right hand techniques such as the drop-thumb and the “galax lick.” You will learn different tunings for different tunes. Tunes will be learned through listening, repeating, and tablature. A recording device will be helpful!

Windborne
Windborne is a group of vocal chameleons who specialize in close harmony singing, shifting effortlessly between drastically different styles of traditional music within the same concert. Their musical knowledge spans many continents and cultures, but they remain deeply rooted in American folk-singing traditions. African Drum Class
3rd Monday of the Month (Sept.–June)
Study African drumming. Participants will learn authentic drumming from many countries in West Africa. Emphasis will be on traditional rhythms & drumming techniques on djembes, dunduns & other hand drums. Please join us for this fun filled class. All levels are welcomed. Some drums may be available to borrow on a first come, first served basis. Instructor John Dickson.

Irish Fiddle
with Hilary Schrauf for 6 weeks
This class assumes moderate previous experience with the fiddle (know the names of the notes and strings; know how to hold the bow), and little to moderate experience with Irish traditional music. We’ll have fun digging in to the different types of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.) — and maybe a composition or two — while exploring what makes them sound Irish. Some bowing, slurring, ornamentation, and variations will be taught. Sound files, sheet music and links to other resources will be provided. Reading sheet music is not a requirement.

John Kirk & Trish Miller present fiery fiddle tunes, folksongs, and fancy footwork to audiences of all ages. John’s lyric voice, good sense of humor, and versatile instrumental skills — fiddle, mandolin, and several other instruments — have earned him widespread recognition in folk and traditional music circles.
