Let’s pick up the guitar and play! If you just got your first guitar or are stuck in learning on your own, this class is for you! You will learn essential chords, rhythm, basic finger picking patterns, tablature, and notes while learning songs. You will also gain knowledge of some basic music theory in guitar playing. Have fun while learning the fundamentals that make guitar playing rewarding in a comfortable class environment. Bring your acoustic guitar and a guitar pick. A tuner, and notebook, are recommended. (If you don’t have access to a tuner, some will be made available)
Instructor: Chris Koldewey taught public school music for 32 years, and has been playing guitar since his early days. He has also spent many years as a performer, primarily in traditional folk music. He is interested in a wide variety of music and styles, and enjoys passing some of his experiences on to students, hoping they will get some of the joy that music has given him over the years.

Vandalia — Live at Old Songs
Vandalia is dedicated to exploring the depth and breadth of American String-band music. Dakota Karpe is steeped in the West Virginia fiddling tradition as the protege of master fiddler Joe Herrmann. Ellen Gira, has made a reputation herself as one of the most versatile cellists in the trad world, stretching the boundaries of style with elements of the Scottish, Irish, American, Scandinavian and Canadian traditions. A classical-to-bluegrass guitar crossover, Gabriel Furtado is well known for his front-of-the-beat rhythm playing and driving pocket. 3rd Wednesday of the Month (Sept. – May)
This is a friendly, repertoire-building opportunity to play your new tunes slowly and work on your old tunes at a reasonable tempo. We will focus specifically on traditional Irish music, and all Irish-appropriate instruments are welcome (i.e. wooden flute, tin whistle, concertina, button or piano accordion, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, fiddle, harp). We encourage tape recorders, and focus on learning tunes by ear. Music stands and continuous use of sheet music discouraged. Bring snacks to share. Led by Sean McCorkle.

Cantrip — Live at Old Songs

The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. After 20 years of touring, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer. Grosse Isle — Live at Old Songs
Grosse Isle is a group that “represents the musical best of two great cultures”, Ireland and Québec (Roots music Canada). They have been involved in the trad scene for more than a decade and have recorded numerous critically acclaimed albums separtely and together. 20th Anniversary of Open Mic at Old Songs
The monthly Old Songs Open Mic is celebrating its 20th anniversary in January 2026! The Open Mic began in January 2006 and has welcomed hundreds of performers, family and friends, and enthusiastic audience members over the past two decades. The open mic is very much a community and is constantly welcoming newcomers and welcoming back regular attendees. The January Open Mic will include some extra snacks and lots of good cheer. Please come help us celebrate 20 years of supporting Old Songs and local musicians!

Let’s pick up the guitar and play! If you just got your first guitar or are stuck in learning on your own, this class is for you! You will learn essential chords, rhythm, basic finger picking patterns, tablature, and notes while learning songs. You will also gain knowledge of some basic music theory in guitar playing. Have fun while learning the fundamentals that make guitar playing rewarding in a comfortable class environment. Bring your acoustic guitar and a guitar pick. A tuner, and notebook, are recommended. (If you don’t have access to a tuner, some will be made available)
Instructor: Chris Koldewey taught public school music for 32 years, and has been playing guitar since his early days. He has also spent many years as a performer, primarily in traditional folk music. He is interested in a wide variety of music and styles, and enjoys passing some of his experiences on to students, hoping they will get some of the joy that music has given him over the years.
