Vandalia — Live at Old Songs

Saturday, October 11, 2025 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Old Songs Community Arts Center, 37 S Main St
Voorheesville, NY 12186 United States

Vandalia is dedicated to exploring the depth and breadth of American String-band music. Dakota Karpe is steeped in the West Virginia fiddling tradition as the protege of master fiddler Joe Herrmann. Ellen Gira, has made a reputation herself as one of the most versatile cellists in the trad world, stretching the boundaries of style with elements of the Scottish, Irish, American, Scandinavian and Canadian traditions. A classical-to-bluegrass guitar crossover, Gabriel Furtado is well known for his front-of-the-beat rhythm playing and driving pocket. Saturday, October 18, 2025 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Voorheesville, NY 12186 United States

Internationally acclaimed The Johnson Girls have been a force on the folk and maritime music scene since 1997 as the leading all-woman, a cappella maritime group in the world. Cantrip — Live at Old Songs

Saturday, November 15, 2025 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Old Songs Community Arts Center, 37 S Main St
Voorheesville, NY 12186 United States

A limited number of in-person tickets remain… please purchase online ahead of time!

The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. After 20 years of touring, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer. Dan Houghton, Jon Bews, Alasdair White and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches’ cauldron, slowly coalescing into chaotic order. cantrip-music.com

Ever wonder just how those old sea chanteys were used during the age of sail? Join Chris in singing and a ‘virtual’ demonstration of the working of a 19th century square-rigged sailing vessel, and the specific songs that helped get the jobs done together and more easily. By use of a Powerpoint demonstration, and Chris’ knowledge gained after a 20-year association as Chanteyman with the demonstration squad of Mystic Seaport Museum and sailing square-riggers, participants will virtually ‘sail’ a 19th century vessel, singing as we go. In addition to the songs themselves, we’ll learn how the form, pace, and style changed depending on their specific use. We’ll learn about shipboard life aboard a square-rigger, and the maritime trades as well as some of the ‘rituals’ that included their own songs. (All levels and abilities)

Old Songs Community Arts Center, 37 S Main St
Voorheesville, NY 12186 United States

In a world dominated by the trends and logic of the market, Beppe Gambetta’s playing and singing stand out. His is an inspired music that avoids relying solely on his technical excellence, but also reveals the innermost feelings of a brilliant, playful mind that is always exploring and innovating while staying firmly rooted in tradition. He naturally and seamlessly bridges the shores of two continents, creating a musical fusion of American roots and the Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads, steel-string guitars and vintage harp-guitars.

Sea Chanteys: How They Were Used

Thursday, March 19 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Thursday, happening 6 times

Old Songs Community Arts Center, 37 S Main St
Voorheesville, NY 12186 United States

with Chris Koldewey
