Windborne is a group of vocal chameleons who specialize in close harmony singing, shifting effortlessly between drastically different styles of traditional music within the same concert. Their musical knowledge spans many continents and cultures, but they remain deeply rooted in American folk-singing traditions. Lynn Mahoney Rowan, Will Thomas Rowan, Lauren Breunig, and Jeremy Carter-Gordon share a vibrant energy onstage— their connection to each other and to the music is clearly evident. They educate as they entertain, telling stories about the music and explaining the characteristics and stylistic elements of the traditions in which they sing. windbornesingers.com

This class assumes moderate previous experience with the fiddle (know the names of the notes and strings; know how to hold the bow), and little to moderate experience with Irish traditional music. We’ll have fun digging in to the different types of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc.) — and maybe a composition or two — while exploring what makes them sound Irish. Some bowing, slurring, ornamentation, and variations will be taught. Sound files, sheet music and links to other resources will be provided. Reading sheet music is not a requirement.

Magpie is Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner, whose repertoire ranges from traditional and vintage Americana to contemporary and original compositions. Terry is a gifted singer of jazz and blues, but is equally comfortable with the subtle beauty of traditional folk and contemporary songs. She is also an excellent player of the harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer, and rhythm guitar. Greg is an outstanding finger-style guitarist, and his captivating vocal interpretation gives power and beauty to the full spectrum, from growling blues, to a Chilean lament, to a sweet croon. magpiemusic.com

George Wilson and Donna Hébert are two extraordinary fiddlers who have trod similar paths over their respective fifty years. Sharing many musical friends and mentors, they love each other’s music and the soul they bring to every tune. When they realized both were celebrating fifty years of fiddling, they decided to do it together at Old Songs. They will take you on a ‘tour de fiddle’ with two of the best fiddlers in folk music.
Joining them on this program are Selma Kaplan, Max Cohen, and Molly Hebert Wilson.

Lorraine Lee Hammond grew up in rural New England when ballads and barn dances were part of community life. Her many credits as a traditional singer, songwriter, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist. Bennett Hammond is a superb finger-style guitarist and recent convert to the five string banjo. He names “the three Bs,” Bach, the blues and Buddy Holly, as major influences.
Together, The Hammonds are versatile musicians, engaging entertainers, and fun teachers. Their warm stage presence is punctuated with wry humor, and their command of their instruments and musical genres is without flaw. Their repertoire ranges in style from classical through Celtic, blues and contemporary.

POSTPONED: The concert previously scheduled for Friday, February 11 has been postponed to a soon to be rescheduled, later date.
Back from a ten-year lunch break, Mad Agnes has reunited to bring you the intricate harmonies and compelling songwriting that have always been their signature. Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders have been singing and playing together since there were dinosaurs, performing across the U.S. and overseas. While dodging labels and mixing styles (Folk, classical or Celtic? Soaring vocals, incisive lyrics or giggly repartee?), the genre-bending trio has won hearts on two continents, and individually and collectively amassed a body of work which comprises 13 CDs and a concert DVD.
Though each member is a multi-instrumentalist, this iteration sees them pared down with fewer instruments and only one microphone, around which they form and re-form, early-radio style. This allows them to be more playful and more connected, bringing you guitars, mandolin, percussion, keyboard, and “three-part harmonies as tight as jeans from the dryer” (Rob Weir, The Advocate).

I doubt any of Bristol’s The Longest Johns ever imagined they would be able to get so far on just four voices. Born out of a mutual love of traditional folk songs and shanties, they rock maritime songs alongside the more unusual and less traditional folk tunes. In a few short years they have gone from singing sea shanties in a kitchen to International folk festivals, tours, TV appearances and gained a huge online following. As the face of the 2021 sea shanty revival with their track Wellerman, the Johns are reaching millions of new fans all across the globe and showing them just how great these songs can be.

In Person AND Live Streamed at Old Songs
In a world dominated by the trends and logic of the market, Beppe Gambetta’s playing and singing stand out. His is an inspired music that avoids relying solely on his technical excellence, but also reveals the innermost feelings of a brilliant, playful mind that is always exploring and innovating while staying firmly rooted in tradition. He naturally and seamlessly bridges the shores of two continents, creating a musical fusion of American roots and the Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads, steel-string guitars and vintage harp-guitars.

Postponed to a soon-to-be rescheduled, later date.
Effervescent and engaging, Boston-based fiddler Hanneke Cassel’s fiddle music fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations. Hanneke’s music is a blend of the contemporary and traditional, described by the Boston Globe as “exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness.”
The Hanneke Cassel Band features Keith Murphy on guitar/vocals and Jenna Moynihan on 5-string fiddle/vocals. Newfoundland-born guitarist Keith Murphy is a rhythmic powerhouse on guitar and a traditional singer of rare finesse. A native of Newfoundland, he has lived in New England for many years where he has been an influential presence in the traditional music scene through his work with many respected bands, as a tune writer and as director of the Northern Roots Festival in Brattleboro, VT. Jenna Moynihan is regarded as one of the best of the best in the new generation of fiddle players. Versatile and inventive, her fiddling style draws strongly from the Scottish tradition, but is in no way bound by it.
Together, the Hanneke Cassel Band creates a cutting-edge acoustic sound that retains the integrity and spirit of the Scottish tradition.

We’re coming down from the cloud and we’re back in person for the 2022 edition of Spring Into Uke at Old Songs. This year the great Jim Beloff will be back, teaching workshops, talking about his new book and the history of our modern day uke phenom, and of course performing. Bernice Lewis will also be teaching song smithing on the uke, and Ron Gordon will teach about fingerpicking. Our schedule will maintain the usual 6 workshops, a concert, and is modified to adapt to our current realities. Lunch will be out and the day will wrap up by 4:30. We are looking forward to seeing you there and revving up our uke energy for the warm months ahead.

In Person AND Live Streamed at Old Songs
The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. After 20 years of touring, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer. Dan Houghton, Jon Bews and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches’ cauldron, slowly coalescing into chaotic order.
